A birding enthusiast in the Pacific Northwest caused a stir on Facebook after making a striking post images A bald eagle fighting a coyote over a light brown carcass.
“There isn’t enough action in most of our bird shots (Many of them are amazing, of course),” said Craig Dunn. Facebook mail “A fawn died on the road last month and attracted some visitors. I often forget how big bald eagles get. The canines look young; the eagle had a young to feed in the nest.”
Surprised viewers flocked to the comments to share their opinions on the rare photos, which Dunn said were taken with a trail camera.
“Wow,” wrote a commentator. “These are wonderful pictures.”
“What a great encounter!” another in question.
“I always try to remember that a female bald eagle’s wingspan is about the width of a doorway!” added another. “Pretty big! They’re so cool.”
In addition to showing the bald eagle’s staggering size and ferocity, the photos also highlighted the spectacular views that can be captured with a trail camera.
Beyond their ability to reveal rare and striking images of animals in their natural habitat, trail cameras serve important purposes when it comes to wildlife management.
“Trail cameras can be used for more than nature monitoring or exploration and can be a powerful management tool.” a report By the AgriLife Extension Service, part of the Texas A&M system. “For example, information can be collected on animal movement and range size, minimum population size, demographic data… identifying nest predators or cataloging vertebrate diversity.
“Diffuse cameras provide information that complements other data sources collected on the property (e.g. browsing surveys, spot counts, harvest data) to strengthen management decisions.”

Additionally, trail cameras and “camera traps” can be effective in helping track rare or hard-to-find creatures as part of conservation efforts.
In Israel, for example, a recording camera captured images of a honey badger standing on the ground facing a much larger coyote, revealing both the honey badger’s known fearlessness and the success of conservation efforts aimed at returning them to the region.
Similarly, tracking cameras installed in the Central African Republic captured breathtaking video of a mother lioness and her cubs, documenting the success of years of conservation efforts.
In addition to giving scientists an unprecedented view of animals in their natural habitat, trail camera footage can also help educate the public about the importance of protecting wildlife and the fragile ecosystems they call home.
Judging by the reactions to Dunn’s footage of the bald eagle-coyote fight, many people are still fascinated by the wonder of nature.
