EU suspends trade deal with US amid Donald Trump’s Greenland tariff threats, says, ‘ratification will have to wait’

The agreement between the US and the EU, announced in July 2025 and consisting of 27 member states, created a bilateral framework agreement aimed at resolving various tariff and trade issues.

Following US President Donald Trump’s warning to impose customs duties on Denmark and other European countries due to the sale of Greenland, the European Union called for a pause in the approval process of the EU-US trade agreement announced in July 2025.

The agreement between the US and the EU, announced in July 2025 and consisting of 27 member states, created a bilateral framework agreement aimed at resolving various tariff and trade issues.

However, Trump’s latest post on Truth Social cast doubt on the future of the agreement.

On Saturday, Trump threatened to impose tariffs on Denmark and other European countries if they do not agree to sell Greenland.

In his post, Trump claimed that this move was necessary for national security, citing China and Russia’s interest in the region.

He offered to negotiate with European countries, but warned that if an agreement was not reached, tariffs would be increased by 10 percent from February 1, 2026, and 25 percent from June 1, 2026, and stated that after years of US support, “it is time for Denmark to give back.”

“Beginning February 1, 2026, a 10% Tariff will apply to all goods shipped to the United States from all above-mentioned Countries (Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, United Kingdom, Netherlands, and Finland). On June 1, 2026, the Tariff will be increased to 25%. This Tariff will be due and payable until an Agreement is reached for the Full and Complete purchase of Greenland,” Trump said.

Trump has been adamant about buying Denmark’s semi-autonomous region of Greenland, citing national security concerns. Washington claims that Greenland’s strategic location and mineral resources are vital to its security, but the leadership in Denmark and Greenland have rejected this idea, emphasizing their right to self-determination.

Muresan added in a follow-up post that Trump’s latest statement undermines “stability”, the only expected benefit from last year’s trade deal.

He also noted that this is why delaying ratification of the trade deal is warranted.

Muresan said, “The only gain from the trade agreement signed between the USA and the European Union last year would be STABILITY. Today, President Trump’s announcement that he will impose new customs duties on several EU member countries eliminates this stability. Therefore, postponing the approval of the trade agreement is justified.” he said.

Meanwhile, Germany, Sweden, France, Norway, the Netherlands and Finland have sent small numbers of military personnel to Greenland, while Denmark has increased its own military presence following Trump’s call to purchase the Arctic island.

Concerns have flared over the possible impact of the situation on NATO, with some European leaders warning that a US attempt to seize Greenland could lead to the collapse of the alliance.
