Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., compared White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller’s remarks about immigrants to the way the Nazis described Jewish people in an interview Sunday.

CBS anchor Margaret Brennan asked Omar to respond to a statement Miller made about immigrants. wrote on it social media“No magical transformation occurs when failed states cross borders. Immigrants and their descendants recreate the conditions and horrors of their shattered homelands on a massive scale.”

Omar said it was “White supremacist rhetoric” before comparing it to the Nazis’ characterization of the Jewish people.

“It reminds me of the way the Nazis defined the Jewish people in Germany. As you know, there were many immigrants who tried to come to the United States and came back; one of them was Jewish immigrants. We know how people from Ireland, Irish immigrants, were defined,” Omar said.

“We know how people were defined in that era of Italian immigrants. And to me, we’re, yes, of course we’re ethnically Somali, we’re in this country as Americans, we’re citizens, we’re a productive part of this nation and we will continue to be,” he added.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

President Donald Trump disparaged Minnesota’s Somali community over the state’s Feeding Our Future fraud scheme. As of November 2025, more than 75 people have been charged in connection with the scheme, according to federal prosecutors.

Some of these individuals are part of the Somali diaspora in Minnesota, the largest diaspora in the United States, but the ringleader of the scheme is not.

Omar responded to Trump’s comments about the Somali community in Sunday’s interview.

“Disgusting. Totally disgusting. These are the Americans he calls trash. And we think he has an unhealthy obsession with the Somali community, an unhealthy and creepy obsession with me. I think it’s also really important that we remember that this kind of hateful rhetoric and this level of dehumanization can lead to dangerous actions by people who listen to the president,” she said.

Omar was pressed to explain how fraud got out of control in Minnesota during a recent interview on CNN.

“I think what’s happening is, you know, when you have these kinds of new programs designed to help people, a lot of times you’re relying on third parties to facilitate that. And I think a lot of the COVID programs that were set up – they were set up so quickly that a lot of guardrails couldn’t be put in place,” Omar said.
