One of the greatest tools at the monarchy’s disposal is their ability to shine a light on the incredible work of others – and that’s what the likes of King Charles and Prince William continue to do on a daily basis. While many aspects of how the Royal Family still operates are steeped in tradition and history, Queen Elizabeth II. Many modern additions have been made since Elizabeth’s death.
Whether it’s a willingness to share their personal views or openly addressing controversial royal relationships, such as giving notice to Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, they’re certainly keeping up with the times.
Speaking about how this process could continue, a leading royal expert explained exactly why the Firm will survive despite its strong connection to the past.
write in iPaperFormer BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond described the whole concept of monarchy as an “anachronism” but explained exactly why this feature will be key to their survival.
He explained: “Monarchy is indeed an anachronism, but in this country at least, against an ever-changing background of toxic politics, it is an anachronism that works.”
Ms Bond detailed certain elements of royal life that she hopes will be further adapted when it comes time for Prince William to ascend to the throne. These included a noticeable reduction in the number of royal estates and the elimination of the need to bow and curtsy.
While the King has gone some way to modernizing the Royal Family by streamlining senior royals who can step in for him, taking a tougher approach on non-working royals and giving personal updates on their health, Ms Bond thinks what separates the monarchy from politics is what will ensure its success.
While much of the monarchy’s appeal is based on magic, tradition and history, it needs to change with the times, and Prince William is already well on his way to doing so.
Like his father, Prince William takes an emotional, business-oriented approach and likes to actively throw his weight behind a cause. This is in stark contrast to the late Queen, who preferred to continue her role as a quiet but ever-present figure who supported hundreds of different charities.
While the King certainly still has plenty of patronage, he has made a tangible difference in certain areas, such as helping people from underprivileged backgrounds get their lives back on track through employment and support from organizations such as The King’s Trust.
Taking a page from King’s book, William is doing the same, but on a more focused scale, supporting a range of causes from homelessness to the environment to emergency services.
While the Royal Family may be old-fashioned by design, their willingness to keep up with the times without completely forgetting the past will be key to their success.
