‘I’m here to be manager, not coach’ – Ruben Amorim challenges Man Utd chiefs but plans to leave in 18 months

Ruben Amorim has challenged Manchester United bosses to let him do his job without interference.

Pointing to problems behind the scenes on Friday, Amorim waited until the last question of the post-match media conference after the 1-1 draw with Leeds United to make another important point.

He stated that during this period he was subject to unwanted internal interference from United’s senior figures and that the club became overly sensitive to external criticism.

He also brought up the names of three notable former Premier League bosses and said they would not be subjected to the same behaviour.

Amorim has repeatedly said he will leave the club within 18 months, when his contract expires.

“I want to say that I came here to be a coach, not to be a coach,” he said.

“In every department – the scouting department, the athletic director – [they] They need to do their job. I’ll do mine for 18 months and then we’ll move on.

“I just want to say that I will be the manager of this team, not just the coach. I was really clear about that. This will be over in 18 months and then everyone will move on. That was the deal. That’s my job. It’s not about being a coach.”

“If people can’t handle Gary Nevilles and criticism of everything we need to change the club.”
