Met Office issues power cut warning for 62 UK counties | Weather | News

The Met Office has issued a warning for power outages following Storm Bram, which could lead to “danger to life” and left some communities without power. Severe weather warnings, including amber warnings, have been issued ahead of the major storm as the UK braces for torrential rain and 90mph winds.


Storm Bram, named by Met Éireann, the Irish equivalent of the Met Office, will move towards the north and west of the UK today, Monday 8 December. Storm Bram could bring more than half a month’s worth of rainfall to parts of the UK in just a 24-hour period, the Met Office has warned. Heavy rain is expected to intensify from Monday evening and continue overnight into Tuesday morning; Between 50 mm (2 inches) and 75 mm (3 inches) of rain is expected to fall in approximately nine hours.

As a result, the Met Office issued a power outage warning for 62 counties in England.

A Met Office spokesman said: “There is a slight possibility of power outages and disruption to other services to some homes and businesses.”

There is also the possibility that homes and businesses will be flooded and some buildings may be damaged.

A heavy rain warning is in force for large parts of Wales from midnight on December 9 until 10am tomorrow. The warning covers Blaenau Gwent, Bridgend, Caerphilly, Carmarthenshire, Merthyr Tydfil, Monmouthshire, Neath Port Talbot, Powys, Rhondda Cynon Taf, Swansea and Torfaen.

A yellow weather warning for rain covering parts of Devon and Cornwall will also be in force from midnight until 10am on Tuesday as the storm is expected to cause disruption.

A yellow weather warning for wind in Scotland will come into force from 16:00 tomorrow and will remain in force until 23:59. The warning covers: Na h-Eileanan Siar, Highland and Argyll and Bute.
