Imran Khan’s sisters demand investigation into ‘brutal’ police attack
Former Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan‘s sisters have insisted on a transparent investigation into the “brutal” police attack on them and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) supporters outside Adiala Jail last week. Khan’s three sisters – Noreen Niazi, Aleema Khan and Dr. Uzma Khan – along with other Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) members – were protesting outside Adiala Jail after they were denied talks with her for a month. The sisters alleged that police personnel attacked them while they were sitting “peacefully” outside the jail and brutally assaulted them for “the crime of seeking a meeting with Imran Khan”, as the party claimed.
What did Imran Khan’s sister Noreen claim?
Some reports even suggest that the sisters were dragged by their hair. The latest controversy over Imran Khan’s death began when Khan’s sisters wrote a letter to Punjab police chief Usman Anwar accusing the police of using ‘brutal and planned’ violence against them “without provocation”. In the letter, Noreen wrote: “We peacefully protested our concerns about the health situation. We did not block roads, obstruct public movement, or engage in any illegal behavior.” They added: “However, without any warning or provocation, streetlights in the area were suddenly switched off, deliberately plunging the scene into darkness. This was followed by a brutal and planned attack by Punjab police personnel.”
“At the age of 71, I was grabbed by my hair, thrown violently to the ground and dragged across the road, sustaining visible injuries,” he slammed. She added that other women sitting with them outside the prison were also slapped and dragged.
“The police conduct was part of a broader and disturbing pattern of indiscriminate force used against peacefully protesting citizens over three years, reflecting a disturbing impunity. The police conduct was not wholly criminal, unlawful, morally reprehensible and did not directly conflict with the fundamental duties of any law enforcement officer in a democratic society,” he said.
Khan’s sisters demanded IGP Punjab to initiate an immediate investigation against all police personnel involved in the brutal attack on them and their party members. PTI chief Imran Khan has been in jail since August 2023.
