The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Wednesday expressed deep concern over the demolition of a recently constructed statue of a Hindu god in the disputed Thailand-Cambodia border area, stating that such disrespectful acts hurt the sentiments of followers around the world and should not take place.

In an official statement, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal emphasized the deep respect for Hindu and Buddhist deities across the region as part of the common civilizational heritage and urged both countries to resolve differences through dialogue and diplomacy to prevent further damage to lives, property and heritage.

“We have seen reports of the destruction of a recently constructed statue of a Hindu religious deity located in an area affected by the ongoing Thai-Cambodian border dispute. Hindu and Buddhist deities are deeply revered and worshiped by the people of the region as part of our common civilizational heritage. Despite territorial claims, such sacrilegious acts hurt the sentiments of followers worldwide and should not take place. We call on the two sides to once again return to dialogue and diplomacy, to restart peace. The statue of Lord Vishnu was allegedly demolished by the Thai army on Monday, following more than two weeks of military clashes between the two countries.

The statue of Lord Vishnu, built in 2014, was demolished by Thai military engineers using a bulldozer. Earlier today, Cambodia harshly criticized Thailand for destroying a Hindu statue in the disputed border area. Clashes between the two neighboring countries began in July this year. A ceasefire was reached with the help of US President Donald Trump in July, but fighting resumed this month.
