India is finalizing an agreement on oil and gas supplies to Mauritius to strengthen energy security amid the crisis arising from the West Asian conflict, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said on Thursday, April 9, 2026.

Jaishankar, who is in Mauritius to attend the 9th Indian Ocean Conference, said that, as Mauritius Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam reminded him, the ongoing crisis in West Asia underlines the importance of strategic partnerships, especially in the energy sector.

The West Asian war and Iran’s hold on the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway through which one-fifth of global oil passes, had halted shipping and caused global oil prices to soar.
