New Delhi has warned to take “appropriate measures” to protect its interests after Mexico approved a broad 50 percent tariff on imports of selected products from India, a government official said. According to news agency PTI, the official added that India was in contact with Mexico during the initial presentation of a bill on this issue. A high-level meeting has already been held between Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal and Mexican Deputy Economy Minister Luis Rosendo, and follow-up meetings are expected.

The official quoted in the PTI report said: “India reserves the right to take appropriate measures to protect the interests of Indian exporters while continuing to seek a solution through constructive dialogue.” They added: “The Ministry of Commerce is in contact with the Mexican Ministry of Economy to explore mutually beneficial solutions that comply with global trade rules… India values ​​its partnership with Mexico and stands ready to work collaboratively for a stable and balanced trade environment that benefits businesses and consumers in both countries.”
