Landmark agreement approved by PNG cabinet

Papua New Guinea’s cabinet approved a turning point with Australia and paved the way for the agreement to sign early next week.

Prime Minister Anthony Albania and its counterpart James Marape, last month, hoped to sign the agreement during the 50th anniversary of PNG’s independence celebrations, but these plans were taken to the shelf when PNG’s cabinet could not collect a core to approve the agreement.

Sources familiar with PAKT said that PNG’s cabinet came together on Wednesday and approved the treaty that would allow PNG and Australian citizens to serve each other’s soldiers.

Marape is expected to participate in the national Rugby League Grand final in Sydney with Albanian on Sunday and open the possibility of signing the treaty in the following days.
