India sends 38,000 metric tonnes of fuel to support Sri Lanka

India has delivered 38,000 metric tonnes (MT) of oil to Sri Lanka, including 20,000 MT of diesel and 18,000 MT of petrol, the Indian High Commission in Colombo said on Saturday (March 28, 2026).
The High Commission, Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. He said that S. Jaishankar and Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath also had a telephone conversation on March 23, 2026.

The development follows a telephone conversation between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake on March 24, 2026, focusing on the war in West Asia, disruption in global supply chains and energy cooperation between New Delhi and Colombo.
The Commission added that Sri Lanka IOC had previously secured fuel supplies from West Asia and Singapore for March. However, ‘the contracted suppliers stated that they could not deliver the product due to supply disruptions and unavailability of ships due to the ongoing conflict in West Asia and requested force majeure.

India has been requested to provide 38,000 MT of salvage material through IOCL. The statement stated that the Government of India, through the Lanka IOC, supports Sri Lanka in maintaining the continuity of fuel supply.
