India Summons Bangladesh Envoy Over Dhaka Mission Security Concerns

New Delhi: India’s Ministry of External Affairs on Wednesday summoned Bangladesh High Commissioner M Riaz Hamidullah over concerns about the security of the Indian High Commission in Dhaka following a reported threat.
The move comes amid rising tensions following National Citizen Party (NCP) leader Hasnat Abdullah’s anti-India rhetoric. In a public speech, Abdullah reportedly threatened to isolate India’s northeastern states, known as the Seven Sisters, and provide refuge to separatist elements if Bangladesh was destabilized. Abdullah is known for his strong anti-India stance.
Earlier, Bangladesh’s Victory Day was celebrated with a cultural program at the Bangladesh Embassy in New Delhi. Speaking at the event, High Commissioner M Riaz Hamidullah emphasized Bangladesh’s determination to fulfill the aspirations of its people, especially the young generation, and highlighted the young demographic profile of the country.
Hamidullah underlined that Bangladesh and India share a mutually beneficial relationship focused on prosperity, peace and regional security. He highlighted the mutual interdependence between the two nations and stressed the importance of strengthening bilateral ties.
“The whole of Bangladesh and all of us are committed to fulfilling the aspirations of our people, especially the young generation. We have a very young demographic. We believe that our relationship with India is in our common interest. We have mutual interdependence. We are fully focused on prosperity, peace and security in the region.”
The rich culture and heritage of Bangladesh was showcased at the event, and its freedom and independence were celebrated. The High Commissioner’s remarks reflected Bangladesh’s determination to advance the interests of its people while fostering strong relations with India.
Meanwhile, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar congratulated Bangladesh on Victory Day. “Greetings to Foreign Affairs Advisor Mohammad Touhid Hossain, the Interim Government and the people of Bangladesh from Bijoy Dibosh,” he said in a post on X.
On the 54th anniversary of the Liberation War, eight brave Muktijoddha and two officers of the Bangladesh Armed Forces arrived in India on December 14, 2025, to participate in the Vijay Diwas celebrations in Kolkata, the Indian High Commission in Bangladesh said.
Similarly, eight Indian war veterans and two officers of the Indian Armed Forces reached Dhaka on December 15, 2025, to attend Bangladesh’s Victory Day celebrations.
