India to defend ‘red lines’ as fresh tariffs loom

23 August 2025 18:58 | News

India’s trade negotiations with Washington continue, but the country’s Foreign Minister, a few days before the shooting of the Great US tariffs, has lines that the new Delhi had to defend.

Indian goods are faced with an additional 50 percent tariffs up to 50 percent of those imposed by Washington due to increasing purchases of Russian oil.

25 percent of the tariff already entered into force, the remaining 25 percent of August 27 will be applied.

A visit to the new Delhi between 25-29 August, US commercial negotiators, has been launched, hoping that Deling can be reduced or postponed.

India Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, the economic Times forum event in the new Delhi, selected the interests of the country’s farmers and small producers, “We have some red lines to be maintained and defended in negotiations,” he said.

India-US trade talks collapsed in 2025 before India did not agree to open wide agricultural and milk sectors.

The bilateral trade, among the world’s largest and fifth largest economy, is worth $ 190 billion (A293 billion dollars).

Jaishankar, “our national interests are our right to make decisions,” he said.

Capital Economics analysts said on Friday, if all the US tariffs come into force, the economic growth of India will be 0.8 percent in 2025 and 2026, he said.

“A high tariff can pierce India’s charm as a global production center, long -term damage may be even greater.”

HDA Minister Donald Trump described the policy announcements unusual.

Jaishankar said, ız We have not had a US president who carried out its foreign policy publicly open to the public, and (this) is separated from the traditional way of conducting business with the world, ”he said.

He also said that Washington’s concern about India’s Russian oil purchases is not applied to other major buyers such as China and the European Union.

“If the argument is oil, there are other (other) big buyers.

He said Russia-European trade is greater than India-Russia trade.

The Minister also said that India’s Russian oil purchases did not come to the agenda in previous trade talks with the US before the public announcement of the tariffs.
