India wants air conditioners to be made with milder temperature settings to save energy

Bengaluru, India (AP)-India, the government, is trying to limit the temperature settings in new air conditioners to save electricity in the country that thinks the fastest growing market for them.

The minister of Power proposed a rule that required the air conditioners sold in the country to have thermostats that were not lower than 20 degrees Celsius (68 Fahrenheit).

Authorities hopes that small change will save great energy in the country of more than 1.4 billion people. Every year, approximately 10 million to 15 million air conditioners are sold and the urbanization is sold with temperatures.

The lowest setting is 17 C (62 f). Authorities say that an air conditioner has emerged every degree and saves approximately 6% of energy.

Reaction to Change Mixed

Energy experts, the proposal is a positive step, but the units will help to be more energy efficient will help more, he said.

Power Minister Manohar Lal Khattar said that the proposed rule would soon enter into force, but it was not specific about timing.

The proposal received mixed investigations from people living in the sweltering cities of India.

“In general, it is good to try and save energy, but at the same time it makes the government sure that people are not very uncomfortable,” he said. “Sometimes there is no choice but to adjust a low air conditioning temperature in cities like Chennai because it is very hot and humid.

Air conditioners are rapidly becoming some of the largest energy detainees in India. Room air conditioners, Berkeley, California University, according to researchers, the highest use of 2024 in India was one -quarter of the electricity needed in India. Researchers estimated that the new AC units added between 2019-2024 have increased the highest demand of India to roughly strengthen the new Delhi.

Energy demand is the highest in the summer months when temperatures in the country can reach 51 degrees Celsius (124 degrees Fahrenheit).

If no changes are made, India is expected to be a power outage until next year. India’s energy hunger is the main reason why the country is one of the highest spreaders of the country’s heating gases. Clean energy use is growingBut most of India’s electricity Fossil fuels that pollute climate like coal.

Berkley said that Nikit Abhyangkar, the leader of the University of California, Indian Energy and Climate Center, like Delhi’s other major Indian cities, now lived bilateral peaks in electricity use – one in the afternoon and the other was largely directed by air conditioners. While solar energy can balance daytime demand, night cooling is still based on fossil fuels.

Rule changes can push consumers to use less energy

The air conditioner proposal is the last of a series of government measures, such as necessitating the cooling of government offices from 24 degrees Celsius (75 degrees Fahrenheit) in the last decade. The government started in 2022 Task Life Program This includes public service messages that encourage people to reduce emissions by interrupting electricity or skipping unnecessary car trips. The initiative announced with too much admiration received mixed answers.

Some support the recommended change in air conditioning settings. 47 -year -old Sunil Kumar from Eastern Delhi said that the rule could prevent fire hazards and low bills.

Kumar, who uses a small commercial vehicle known as Tuk-Tuk, said, “People were living from air conditioning. We can set it up.”

New Delhi -based businessman Surgeet Singh said that it was “unnecessary” to convert air conditioners to the lowest settings existing.

“People have become very comfortable,” he said that cities invest in planting trees to overcome the urban heat.

Indian air conditioners are inefficient

Professor of California, Abhyangar, said he would help change temperature settings, and that he would do more to require air conditioners to be energy -saving.

Abhyangar, who also examined the energy sector in the US, China, Indonesia and Vietnam, said, “tightening minimum efficiency standards can change the works very significantly.”

Pramod Singh, a new Delhi -based alliance for an energy -efficient economy, said that the country’s estimated 80 million older generations, instead of inefficient air conditioners, said that the country is an important challenge for the government.

Abhyangar said that many units in India were so inefficient.

“Although India imports the most important components from China for air conditioners, about 80% of the air conditioners currently sold in India will be banned in China,” he said.

Energy experts, other small changes can reduce energy use and customer costs, for example, to combine new buildings with adequate ventilation, other cooling methods and use smart technologies to run air conditioners.

Abhyangkar, “Air conditioning usage, users also cools much faster as the room is running ceiling fans are also significantly decreasing,” he said.
