Indian Navy targets 200 plus ships by 2035: Chief of Naval Staff Dinesh K Tripathi

Chennai: Indian Navy aims to become a 200-plus ship naval force by 2035 and plans to induct 15 additional ships by 2026, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi said here on Friday.

Speaking after commissioning INS Anjadip at the Chennai Port here, he said the Navy’s long-term vision is to achieve complete self-reliance in shipbuilding at the component level and evolve into a full Aatmanirbhar force by 2047.

“The Navy’s operational footprint extends across the Indian Ocean Region and beyond, with Navy units persistently deployed forward in surveillance, counter-piracy and coordinated patrols, reflecting sustained reach and credible operational depth,” he said.

Noting that the concept of Atmanirbharta has progressed from ‘Make in India’ to ‘Trust in India’, he said, “We have embraced Aatmanirbharta not only as a strategic imperative but also as an investment towards future assurance.” Drawing attention to the ongoing shipbuilding works, Admiral Tripathi said that all 50 ships currently ordered have been built in Indian shipyards. “While we aim to have a 200-plus ship navy by 2035, our aim is to take Aatmanirbharta to the component level and create a full Atmanirbhar force by 2047,” he said.

He said the navy has taken a clear approach to building credible capacity across the spectrum of operations and addressing evolving threat perceptions on both the West and East coasts.

“Under this broader design, the Indian Navy has commissioned 12 warships and one submarine through 2025. This momentum continues with plans to launch around 15 more ships in 2026, setting an unprecedented benchmark and marking the highest induction rate in our history,” he said.
Emphasizing operational readiness, he said the Navy is focusing on improving critical warfare capabilities, especially in Anti-Submarine and undersea warfare. Regarding the commissioning of the ship Anjadip, he said that this is the fourth of the 16th Shallow Water anti-submarine warfare and strengthens the country’s submarine warfare capability, especially in the ‘coastal and littoral’ waters of the Eastern region.

He said Anjadip is equipped with state-of-the-art shallow water sonars, lightweight torpedoes, anti-submarine rockets and battle management system.

Referring to Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, who said that indigenization in defense production strengthens national security, Tripathi said, “In this spirit, our quest for Aatmanirbharta has enabled this ship (Anjadip) to enter service with robust capability and operational effectiveness.” he said. He said it was noteworthy that the Anjadip ship was built by a team of Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers based in Kolkata in the east, at the Kattuppalli shipyard of Larsen and Toubro in the south, and that the ship was equipped with the battle management system designed in Ghaziabad in the north and named after Anjadip Island in the Western region.

“This is a true coming together of a maritime nation that is actually our India,” he said.
