The capacity of major cities to produce new trains must be doubled over the next five years to keep up with the rapid and sustainable growth in travel, the Ministry of Railways said on Friday (December 26, 2025).

He added that the existing infrastructure should be strengthened to meet the needs of the coming years.

Highlighting the actions required to double production capacity by 2030, the plan plans, among others, to expand existing terminals with additional platforms, identify and create new terminals in and around the urban area, build maintenance facilities, including mega bus complexes, and increase departmental capacity through traffic facility works.

“While planning to increase the capacity of the terminals, the stations around the terminals will also be taken into consideration to balance the capacity equally. For example, for the city of Pune, platforms and stabilization lines at the Pune station have also been considered, along with increasing the capacity of Hadapsar, Khadki and Alandi,” the ministry said.

The following statements were made in the statement: “The above application will be made for both suburban and non-suburban traffic, taking into account the different requirements of both segments.” The Ministry will present the comprehensive plan of the stations in 48 major provinces to the Planning Directorate. Some of these cities are Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Patna, Pune, Mathura, Agra and Ludhiana.

“The plan will include works planned, proposed or already approved to achieve the target of doubling train transport capacity over time,” the ministry said.

“Although there is a plan to double the capacity by 2030, the capacity is expected to be increased gradually over the next 5 years in order to immediately benefit from the benefits of the capacity addition. This will help to gradually meet the traffic needs over the years. The plan will classify the actions into three categories: urgent, short-term and long-term.” The proposed plan should be specific with clear timelines and defined outcomes, officials said.

“While the exercise is for specific stations, each Regional Railway (ZR) needs to plan to increase the capacity of trains running through their sections so that not only terminal capacity is increased but also section capacity and operational constraints at stations or yards are addressed,” the ministry said. he said.
