Indigenous deaths in custody the highest in over 40 years

RECORD NUMBER OF DOMESTIC DEATHS IN CUSTODY

A report by the Australian Institute of Criminology has shown that Australia has recorded the highest number of Indigenous deaths in custody in the last 40 years.

Speech It says deaths in 2024-25 are the highest since tracking began in 1979-80 under the National Deaths in Custody Program.

Of the 113 people who died in custody in 2024-25, 33 were from First Nations.

AAP It says there have been a total of 617 Indigenous deaths in custody since the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody in 1991.
