Indore water contamination: Six dead, more than 200 hospitalised, says collector

Six people died and more than 200 people were hospitalized in an outbreak of vomiting and diarrhea caused by contaminated drinking water in Madhya Pradesh’s Indore city, a senior official said on Saturday (January 3, 2026).

While Indore Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargava announced on Friday that he received information about the deaths of 10 patients due to the epidemic, residents of Bhagirathpura district claimed that 16 people, including a six-month-old child, died.

“Currently, 203 patients are receiving treatment in 41 hospitals in the city and six people have died,” Collector Shivam Verma told PTI Video. he said.

34 of the patients admitted to hospitals are being treated specifically in intensive care units (ICU).

The Madhya Pradesh government has suspended the Indore municipal official and suspended two senior officials due to the health crisis in Bhagirathpura district.

Chief Minister Mohan Yadav said on Friday that he has ordered the “dismissal” (transfer) of municipal commissioner Dilip Kumar Yadav and the removal of additional municipal commissioner Rohit Sissoniya and superintendent in charge of the Public Health Engineering department Sanjeev Shrivastava.

In its status report before the Supreme Court, the government stated that the diarrheal disease caused by contaminated water supply is now effectively under control and continuous minute-by-minute monitoring has been implemented to prevent its re-emergence.
