Industry star David Jonsson to play Black Panther in Marvel sequel | Black Panther
British actor David Jonsson was announced as the new Black Panther by the film’s director, Ryan Coogler.
32-year-old Jonsson, known for his roles in Industry, The Long Walk and Alien: Romulus, will play the son of Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa in the third Black Panther film.
Coogler was joined onstage by co-stars Letitia Wright and Winston Duke at Marvel Studios’ Comic-Con International presentation on Saturday to announce the news.
Coogler, who won the best picture Oscar earlier this year for the vampire movie Sinners, said: “The last time we made a movie, we introduced a character who was the son of the character played by the great Chadwick Boseman in that movie – our T’Challa.
“And today I want to tell you that in the next movie he grows up, he comes of age.”
Born in London, Jonsson started his career in the West End. He made his big screen debut in 2018 in two episodes of the British crime series Endeavour, and from 2020 to 2022 he starred as Augustus “Gus” Sackey in the first two series of Industry.
She starred in the 2025 adaptation of Stephen King’s thriller The Long Walk, and won the Bafta rising star award the same year.
Jonsson, who will also star in the upcoming films The Chaperones, Benn/Eubank and Scandalous, said: “Thank you to this family that I have the honor and privilege of joining. I don’t want to say too much because I want to let the screen do the talking.”
Black Panther III will be released in US theaters on December 15, 2028. A UK release date has not yet been confirmed.
Boseman died in 2020 at the age of 43, four years after being diagnosed with colon cancer.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, released in 2022, revealed that Boseman’s character T’Challa has a son. It followed Wright’s character, Shuri, who took on the role of protagonist after T’Challa’s death.
The first film, released in 2018, was set in the legendary country of Wakanda, a secret African kingdom with innovative technology thanks to the world’s most useful reserves of precious metals. He won three Oscars.
Coogler, who directed the first two Black Panther films, also co-produced the 2025 Ironheart and Eyes of Wakanda series.
