India Fast-Tracks Su-30MKI Deal With Armenia As Pakistan Sells JF-17s To Azerbaijan: Reports | India News

India is moving quickly to sign a multi-billion dollar defense deal with Armenia on exports of Su-30MKI fighter jets; officials and analysts see this as New Delhi’s most assertive counter-move to Pakistan’s expanding military cooperation with Azerbaijan. This development comes weeks after Islamabad approved the sale of 40 JF-17C Block-III fighter jets to Baku, deepening the military axis between the two countries. However, there is no official confirmation so far.
According to reports, the Su-30MKI deal, estimated at $2.5-3 billion, is now in the final stages. If finalized, this would mark Armenia’s largest military purchase in history and underscore Azerbaijan’s attempt to narrow its widening power gap with Azerbaijan following decisive victories in the 2020 and 2023 Nagorno-Karabakh conflicts.
A Strategic Change

Armenia has increasingly turned to India for defense supplies after facing setbacks on the battlefield and expressing frustration at what it sees as inadequate support from its traditional ally Russia. Yerevan has been purchasing Pinaka rocket systems, Swathi weapon detection radars, 155 mm guns and anti-tank ammunition from India since 2022. The proposed Su-30MKI purchase significantly increases the partnership and signals Armenia’s intention to rebuild its air power from scratch.
Deliveries of the aircraft are expected to begin in 2027, with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) set to produce a highly customized export variant. The jets are envisaged to have Uttam AESA radar, Astra beyond visual range missiles and state-of-the-art electronic warfare suites; capabilities designed to counter Azerbaijan’s newly acquired JF-17s, if reports are to be believed.
Su-30MKI: Combat Proven Platform
Inducted into the Indian Air Force in 2002, the Su-30MKI remains India’s most powerful air superiority fighter. Known for its long range, heavy payload capacity and thrust vectoring maneuverability, the aircraft is capable of deploying a range of advanced weapons, including the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile.
India has been implementing the “Super Sukhoi” modernization program covering more than 150 aircraft since 2023. Upgrades include digital avionics, improved radar warning receivers, improved electronic warfare systems and compatibility with Astra Mk-2 and Mk-3 air-to-air missiles. These developments made the Su-30MKI increasingly attractive for export.
Expanding India’s Defense Footprint
If the deal is concluded, Armenia will join Egypt and Malaysia among the countries evaluating the Su-30 platform for future purchases. For India, the agreement will not only counter Pakistan’s influence in the Caucasus but also mark an important milestone in its rise as a global defense exporter within the framework of ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’. The talks are expected to conclude soon, potentially reshaping the military balance in the South Caucasus and signaling a new page in India’s assertive defense diplomacy.
