“Because of the personal relationship I have now, it makes me very sad that my husband is out there fighting this man, and to me, them voting for Trump means they’re not voting for my husband and me and our family. And unfortunately I’ve lost relationships with people in my family because of it.” McNearney said.

He went on to say that for him, politics is no longer a “Republican-Democrat” issue, but a “family values” issue.

“And it’s really hard for me because I grew up believing in the Christian ideals of taking care of the sick and the poor, and I don’t see that happening in the Republican Party. And so I feel like I’m in constant conflict and I’m angry all the time, which is not healthy at all,” McNearney explained. “

But now I personalize everything. When I see these scary stories every day, I immediately get angry at some of my aunts, uncles, and cousins. [Trump] in power.”

“I sent a lot of emails to my family, just like right before the election, saying, ‘I’m begging you. Here are 10 reasons not to vote for this guy. Please don’t.'” “And I was either ignored by 90% of them or got some really crazy responses from a few of them. It definitely caused some tension.”

While McNearney said he has lost touch with some relatives who support Trump, he told the podcast hosts that he has grown closer to family members who share his political views.

“I’ve definitely gotten closer to the family, where I feel more in tune with it. And I hate when that happens. … It feels stupid,” he said. “You know, part of me says, ‘Don’t let politics get in my way,’ but to me, that’s not politics. It’s really about values. And we just weren’t aligned anymore.”

Earlier in the podcast, McNearney said St. Growing up in St. Louis, he often voted against Republicans until he moved away and “met people from different backgrounds,” he recalled. He went on to explain how his former views gave him the insight to feel “even a little bit of sympathy” for his conservative family members.
