Trump urges Republicans to scrap Senate filibuster and end shutdown

Trump warned Republicans that Democrats would end the Filibuster and ‘pack the Supreme Court’ and say they would ‘add two new states and eight electoral votes.’

US President Donald Trump on Sunday called on Republicans to end the filibuster in the Senate, saying Democrats would eventually repeal it to expand their political control if given the opportunity. Trump warned Republicans that Democrats would end the Filibuster and “pack the Supreme Court” and said they would “add two new states and eight electoral votes.”

In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote: “Remember, Republicans, regardless of Schumer Shutdown, Democrats will end the Filibuster at the first opportunity they get. They will pack the Supreme Court, take two States, and add at least 8 Electoral Votes. Their two objectors are gone!!! Don’t be weak and stupid. fight, fight, fight! win, win, win!”

The filibuster, a Senate rule that typically requires 60 votes to advance legislation, has long been a point of contention in Washington. Trump noted that several Democratic senators, including those in then-President Joe Biden’s administration, had previously called for changes to the rule to protect voting rights and access to abortion. However, these proposals did not gain full support within the party.

Trump called Democratic politicians “unstable” and promised to end the ‘Entrepreneurship Shutdown’ and deliver his agenda.

He wrote: “We will immediately END the Blackmailer Shutdown, pass our ENTIRE agenda, and make life so much better for Americans that these deranged DEMOCRATIC politicians will never have a chance to DESTROY AMERICA again!

Calling the problem “bigger than the Shutdown” and vital to America’s survival, Trump wrote: “Republicans, you will rue the day you ENDED THE FILIBUSTER!!! BE TOUGH, BE SMART AND WIN!!! This is much bigger than the Shutdown, this is the survival of our Country!”

This isn’t the first time Trump has called for an end to the Filibuster; The US President had called on Senate Republicans on October 31 to implement the “nuclear option” and abolish the filibuster; He argued that this would enable them to end the ongoing government shutdown and pass legislation with a simple majority.

“It’s time for Republicans to play their ‘Trump card’ and turn to the so-called Nuclear Option – Get rid of the Filibuster and get rid of it NOW!” Trump shared a post on Truth Social.

Trump’s comments came after he returned from a trip to Asia when he said he was asked “how Democrats shut down the government and why powerful Republicans allowed them to do it.”

Trump also suggested that Democrats would not hesitate to toss the filibuster if given the chance to pursue their own legislative priorities, such as statehood for Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C.

Under the current rule, the minority party has significant influence to block bills, effectively limiting the majority’s ability to pass its agenda. While past reforms have lowered the threshold for confirming judges and candidates to a simple majority, broader legislative changes still require 60 votes, according to The Hill.

While Republicans in the Senate have 53 seats, it remains unclear whether they have enough support within their ranks to completely eliminate the filibuster.

In recent days, some GOP lawmakers have increasingly discussed possible rule changes if Democrats do not agree to end the shutdown. However, Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R.S.D.) has publicly stated that he opposes weakening the filibuster, The Hill reported.

Even Republicans who have previously supported fraud protections have floated the possibility of a limited exemption to the 60-vote threshold, specifically to make it easier to reopen the government.

Senate Democrats, on the other hand, opposed approving a continuing resolution that maintains current funding levels. They insisted that such action should include an extension of Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies, which are set to expire at the end of the year.

Lawmakers from both parties have expressed concern that Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits could end on November 1. The Hill added that there are also growing concerns about increased flight delays at major airports due to the impact of the closure on air traffic controllers.
