Interest rates live: Bank of England to vote on potential cut today

Interest rates today: Who, when and what

Okay, let’s list the basics for you to know next.

WHO: Interest rates are the area of interest of the Bank of England, particularly members of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC). There are nine of them and they vote on rate changes.

When: It’s noon today. The next one is December 18, then there isn’t another one until February 2026.

What: The current base rate (what we call the ‘interest rate’) is 4%. MPC members will vote to keep this rate the same, increase it or cut it. Typically cuts/raises will be 0.25% (called 25 basis points), but it’s not unheard of for double that or other figures when necessary.
