The International Olympic Committee is preparing to ban transgender women from participating in Olympic events. The Times of London reported on Monday It was stated that the policy decision was taken after a scientific review that revealed the “lasting physical advantages of being born male”.

Former Olympic gold medalist Caitlyn Jenner, a transgender woman, has long advocated for restricting transgender women from competing in women’s sports.

“I’m a trans woman, but I’m still biologically male,” Jenner said Tuesday on “America Reports.”

“I’m XY. There’s nothing I can do to change that. Men have a better advantage, a huge advantage over women in sports. It’s not fair.”

“We have to do the right thing. If we don’t stop this now, it’s just going to destroy women’s sports,” Jenner said.

The IOC’s current policy leaves the decision on whether transgender athletes will be allowed to compete to each sport’s governing body. Leadership changes are expected to change this policy.

The IOC’s first female president, Kirsty Coventry, has signaled she is willing to take a tougher stance on fairness in women’s sports. In June, Coventry said the IOC must “protect the women’s category above all else to ensure justice”.

Jenner, who won an Olympic gold medal at the 1976 Montreal Games before his switch, voiced his support for Coventry. She speaks openly about her experiences as a transgender woman and argues that biological sex differences cannot be completely alleviated by hormone therapy.

“It’s good for him because he knows it’s wrong,” Jenner said of Coventry’s expected decision.

“It takes a good woman to come in there and make really good changes.”

The policy update is expected to be announced in February, ahead of the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics in 2026. The update will arrive before the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028.

The IOC’s review follows controversy in women’s boxing at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Two boxers, Algeria’s Imane Khelif and Taiwan’s Lin Yu-Ting, won gold medals at the 2023 World Championships despite being previously disqualified for failing to meet gender eligibility criteria.

President Donald Trump has also taken a tough stance against women’s sports. Earlier this year, he signed an executive order banning schools and colleges that receive federal funding from allowing biological males onto women’s sports teams and women’s locker rooms. If institutions do not comply, they may risk losing federal funding.
