Iranian authorities say they have arrested dozens of people accused of spying for Israel in several provinces, state media reported over the weekend.

Fars, a news agency affiliated with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), reported on Sunday that the West Azerbaijan prosecutor’s office arrested 20 people in the northwestern city of Urmia for allegedly providing Israel with information about its military, police and security zones.

Iran’s Intelligence Ministry on Saturday said it had arrested several “enemy agents” across the country, including a 10-member network in Mazandaran province and another 10-member network in Khorasan Razavi province, according to the semi-official news agency Tasnim.

Officials said the suspects relayed the locations of military installations and economic infrastructure and shared the coordinates of public places, academic institutions and research centers with Israel.

In South Khuzestan province, intelligence officials also reported the arrest of a three-man “terrorist team” accused of carrying out armed attacks on security forces and government facilities.

The Wall Street Journal reported Israel relied on tips from ordinary Iranians to identify targets for attacks inside Iran, a senior Israeli security official was quoted as saying last week.

The newspaper said information about potential targets was sent through Israeli Persian social media accounts and verified by Israeli officials before the attacks were carried out.

Separately, Bahraini authorities said on Sunday they had arrested five men accused of passing sensitive information to the Revolutionary Guard and helping recruit recruits for possible attacks inside the country.

According to the statement made by the Bahrain Police Media Center, the suspects allegedly collected coordinates and images of sensitive locations, including hotels, and forwarded them to the IRGC.

One suspect had previously received training in IRGC camps “to smuggle people and recruit agents to participate in the execution of terrorist plans,” authorities said.

While the five people detained were referred to the Bahrain Prosecutor’s Office, the sixth suspect identified in the case is believed to be a fugitive abroad.
