Iran security chief Ali Larijani killed in huge airstrike | World | News

Iran has suffered another major blow after its top security chief was killed in a deadly Israeli airstrike overnight, the defense minister said. Israel Katz confirmed the death of Supreme National Security Council Secretary Ali Larijani, but his claims were quickly disputed.

Iran released a handwritten note it said belonged to Larijani to commemorate the deaths of Iranian Navy personnel. The statement said: “The martyrdom of the naval heroes of the Islamic Republic Army in Dena is part of the sacrifices of the brave nation that emerged in this period of the struggle against international oppressors…

“Their memory will always remain in the heart of the Iranian nation, and these martyrs’ cemeteries will strengthen the foundations of the Islamic Republic army within the armed forces in the coming years.

“I pray to God Almighty to grant them the highest degrees.”

Larijani was one of two representatives of the previous religious leader, Ali Khamenei, on the council. In his role as secretary, he served as chief negotiator on national security issues, including Iran’s nuclear program.

According to one report, Larijani was the “mastermind” behind the crackdown, taking advantage of his close ties to Revolutionary Guard commanders and intelligence services and his family’s long-standing connections with senior clerics.

The IDF also confirmed that Basij Resistance Force commander Gholamreza Soleimani and his deputy commander were killed in the attack, as well as several other senior officials.
