Public inquiry into AUKUS is a landmark moment

Asked to respond to Greens Senator David Shoebridge’s criticism of AUKUS on ABC insider Over the long weekend Anthony Albanese simply retold the mantra AUKUS’ “full speed ahead”.

Although much of the debate revolves around whether the ship can be built, crewed, financed, or delivered, the phrase “full steam ahead” conjures up images of a ship already underway and crossing the water safely. In this sense, the slogan functions as a political spell: Say it often and sincerely, imagine it vividly enough, and perhaps submarines will eventually appear on the horizon.
