Iran’s women’s football team appeared to abandon its silent stance at the Women’s Asian Cup on Thursday, singing their national anthem and saluting ahead of their match against Australia.

Meanwhile, Iranian fans voiced their support for President Donald Trump in the stands amid the ongoing joint military action against Iran.

This was in stark contrast to the women’s team remaining silent in the opening game against South Korea, with Iran head coach Marziyeh Jafari, also silent, smiling at her team. The silence has been interpreted by some as an act of resistance during the ongoing joint US and Israeli military offensive against Iran.

However, according to reports, the team was instructed to attend their next match. The team has remained silent on the issue since the start of the tournament. The Women’s Asian Cup did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The night before Iran’s 4-0 defeat against Australia, Iranian striker Sara Didar choked back tears as she shared the players’ and management’s concerns about their families and loved ones during the war.

“Obviously we are all concerned and sorry about what happened to Iran and our families in Iran,” Didar said in comments translated into English at a press conference. he said. “I really hope that good news awaits our country. And I hope that my country will survive strongly.”
