US-Iran tensions
Over the past few weeks, the US’s expansion of its military presence in the Middle East and Iran’s subsequent acceleration of its preparations have increased concerns about the risk of conflict.
Regional countries are pressing to reduce tensions out of fear that a new conflict would destabilize the Middle East and disrupt global energy markets.
President Trump’s long-standing hardline approach towards Iran is not unknown. During his first term, Trump withdrew the United States from the Iran nuclear deal, reimposed “maximum pressure” sanctions, and designated Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a Foreign Terrorist Organization.
After returning to office, Trump reimposed maximum pressure policies to prevent Iran from achieving a nuclear weapon.
US-Iran talks
US President Donald Trump confirmed that Washington and Tehran will hold new talks after the first talks in Oman, which he described as “very good”.
The talks, held Friday in the Gulf Arab state of Oman, were the first round of talks between the two sides since the United States and Israel attacked Iran last summer.
Despite describing the talks as productive, Trump said on Friday that a “large fleet” was heading towards Iran and would arrive soon, according to ANI.
Trump’s tariffs on countries doing business with Iran
According to ANI, Trump signed an executive order on Friday stating the national emergency regarding Iran and establishing a mechanism to impose additional tariffs on countries that continue to do business with Tehran.
Under the decision, the United States may, as of its effective date, impose an additional duty on a value basis, such as up to 25 percent, on goods imported into the United States from any country that directly or indirectly purchases, imports, or otherwise acquires goods or services from Iran.
In another development, the US government had previously issued a security alert for Iran, warning of increased security measures, internet outages, flight cancellations and nationwide communications restrictions. The proposal called on US citizens to leave Iran immediately if it is safe to do so, avoid demonstrations, keep a low profile and be prepared for long-term disruptions.
