The embattled Iranian regime appears to be at an end, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said on Tuesday, as mass protests continued across the country.
Speaking to reporters during his visit to India, Merz reiterated his call on Iranian authorities to end violence against demonstrators and added that he hoped the escalating crisis would end peacefully.
Merz commented, “If a regime can keep itself in power only by using force, then it is effectively the end of the matter. I think we are now seeing the last days and weeks of this regime.” he said. reported by Sky News.
“There is no legitimacy for this through elections among the people anyway. The people are now revolting against this regime.”
Merz’s comments come as Iran grapples with one of the most widespread anti-government demonstrations in recent years.
