Air India unveils first Boeing 787-9 ahead of February debut: Full recline flatbed, amenity kits – Check features, pics

Air India has unveiled the first Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner with newly designed interiors as part of the airline’s transformation under the Tata Group. Air India states that the main focus of the design of the wide-body jet, which features redesigned cabins in Business, Premium Economy and Economy classes, is ‘comfort, healthy living and technology’.
The first line of the aircraft was officially handed over to Air India at Boeing’s Everett factory in Seattle, United States, and then completed the approximately 17-hour non-stop ferry flight, reaching Delhi on January 11. It will enter commercial service on the Mumbai-Frankfurt route next month.
The new 787-9 will operate select long-haul routes and feature upgraded seats, next-generation inflight entertainment systems and enhanced cabin environments aimed at improving the passenger experience across all travel classes.
Business Cabin: Flat beds, privacy and first-class dining
The business cabin offers a 79.3-inch fully reclining flatbed designed for long-distance comfort. The seats feature six-way adjustable headrests, storage compartments and wireless charging features. Each passenger will have access to a 17-inch 4K QLED HDR touchscreen with Bluetooth headset connectivity, as well as a three-pin power outlet and USB Type-A and Type-C ports.
Passengers in the Business Class luxury cabin of the Air India Dreamliner will be provided with luxury amenity kits comprising loungewear and carpet slippers. They will also have access to a high-end dining experience featuring regional gourmet dishes and fine beverages.
Private check-in counters, priority boarding and extra baggage allowance are also included.
Premium Economy: Space, gourmet meals
Premium Economy seats have a 38-inch seat pitch with 7-inch recline, six-way adjustable headrests and calf rests. The cabin is equipped with 13.3-inch 4K QLED HDR touchscreens that support Bluetooth headphones, as well as USB Type-A and Type-C charging ports.
Passengers traveling in this cabin are offered first-class amenity kits, gourmet meals and beverages, and benefit from private check-in, priority boarding and additional baggage allowance.
Economy Class: Comfort-focused upgrades
The economy cabin offers 32 inches of seat pitch with 5 inches of recline, paired with five-way adjustable headrests. Each seat features an 11.6-inch 4K QLED HDR touchscreen with Bluetooth, USB Type-A and Type-C ports, and a full range of hot meals.
Artificial intelligence cabin design rooted in heritage
Air India said the interiors of the 787-9 Dreamliner have been “thoughtfully crafted” to create a calming, balanced environment. The cabin design blends modern aesthetics with heritage-inspired elements, focusing on passenger well-being.
A key highlight is Wellness Mood Lighting, which adapts throughout the journey to support passengers’ natural body rhythms. Inspired by India’s ancient principles of balance and harmony, the lighting system helps regulate melatonin levels, reduce fatigue and promote deeper rest during long flights.
Advanced cabin systems
The aircraft also features innovative cabin systems aimed at improving overall air quality and ride comfort. Advanced HEPA filtration systems capture more than 99.99% of viruses, bacteria and fungi, while noise-reducing engine cowlings and smoother ride technology ensure a quieter flight.
Air India said the lower cabin height, improved humidity levels and precise temperature control are designed to help passengers feel noticeably fresher.
With the entry into service of the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, Air India continues to modernize its fleet and inflight experience as part of its broader transformation strategy.
