Sarah’s whereabouts had remained a secret as she was mentioned repeatedly in some documents released by the US Department of Justice regarding convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The Austrian retreat is described as having “everything you’d need for an extended stay.”
On the Daily Mail’s Palace Confidential podcast, the publication’s Editor-in-Chief Richard Kay suggests Sarah’s appearance conveys a “message” that she wants to stay out of sight.
He said: “Sarah has finally come forward. We knew she would come forward at some stage and we’ve been looking for her for better and worse over the past months.
“He is hiding in a health clinic in Austria, which he has visited before. He lives quite comfortably in a chalet costing £2,000 a night.
“What was she doing? That’s the biggest mystery. She was photographed getting out of a large vehicle with blacked out windows and she didn’t really look like the Fergie we know.”
“His red hair was covered by a baseball cap, he was wearing glasses, I must admit, he looked pretty scruffy. He didn’t want to draw attention to himself. I think that was probably the message. But frankly, it’s intriguing that he finally showed up.”
This follows reports claiming that Sarah’s cousin by marriage, Martin Barrantes, had been speaking to her in recent months and shed light on her reasons for “hiding”. Speaking to the Daily Mail he said: “I spoke to him. [and] I can tell you that he just wanted to protect his children and grandchildren.
“Sarah is going through a difficult time and I wanted to extend our support to her; she is a valued member of our family. Sarah was perhaps a fool to trust her and take that much confidence from her, and I’m sure she regrets it now.”
The Mirror previously reported that Sarah, along with ex-husband Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, had made no attempt to contact any members of the Royal Family since they were stripped of their royal titles.
A friend said: “Sarah is living in fear right now. She’s not immune to everything that’s going on.”
Sarah was embroiled in the Epstein scandal last September when it was revealed that she had continued to communicate with him despite him publicly rejecting her. Meanwhile, documents released in January show Sarah writing to Epstein in an email: “I am at your service. Just marry me.”
