‘It started with a single phone call’: Veteran broadcaster MICHAEL BUERK’S harrowing firsthand account of Britain’s deadliest terror attack at Lockerbie

On December 21, 1988, a Boeing 747 named Clipper Maid of the Seas exploded over the Scottish town of Lockerbie while en route from London to New York.
The mid-air explosion killed passengers from 21 countries, including 35 Syracuse University students flying home for Christmas, making it Britain’s deadliest terrorist attack.
That night, Michael Buerk covered the breaking news on BBC Nine O’Clock News. He flew to Scotland at dawn and arrived in Lockerbie the morning after the bombing.
