US close to allowing Anthropic to restore Fable 5 model, Axios reports

June 27 (Reuters) – The Trump administration is moving closer to allowing Anthropic to regain access to the “Fable 5” model, Axios reported on Saturday, citing a source familiar with the situation.

Reuters could not immediately confirm the report. ​Anthropic and the White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Anthropic abruptly disabled its most advanced AI models (Mythos 5 and Fable 5) for all users following the government’s June 12 export control order.

The report stated that insiders expect the administration’s limits on Fable 5 to be lifted starting next week.

The report, citing a second source, stated that talks between the parties are expected to continue throughout the weekend and that Anthropic expects to restore access to Fable soon.

Anthropic said on Friday that the US government had allowed it to disclose the Claude Mythos 5 AI model to some “trusted” US organisations, partially reversing an order two weeks ago to suspend access due to national security risks.

The government is on track to allow Anthropic to publish Fable soon, but the timeline is unclear, a source familiar with the directive told Reuters.

Both Fable 5 and Mythos use the same basic AI model, but Fable 5 was designed to be widely available for public use, although some protections were removed for Mythos.
