Jaguar Land Rover cyber attack cost company nearly £200m

The cyber attack on Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) cost around £200 million, the company has announced.

Britain’s biggest carmaker said it had “made strong progress” in rapidly recovering its operations since the attack.

JLR halted production at its UK factories for five weeks from September 1 after they were targeted by hackers the day before.

All of the group’s manufacturing sites, including factories in Solihull, West Midlands and Halewood, Merseyside, resumed operations last month.

JLR has revealed it suffered an underlying loss of £485 million in the second quarter of the year as earnings fell following a serious cyber attack.

The British luxury car manufacturer made a profit of approximately £ 400 million before taxes and exceptional items in the same period of 2024.

It also reported a loss of £134 million in the six months to the end of September, down from a profit of £1.1 billion the previous year.

Adrian Mardell, JLR’s chief executive, said the company’s financial performance had been “impacted by significant challenges, including a cyber incident in September that halted our vehicle production and the impact of US tariffs”.

The manufacturer said the cost of the cyberattack was £196 million.

The cyber attack on Jaguar Land Rover is thought to be the UK’s most economically damaging hack and is estimated to have cost the country £1.9 billion.

The Cyber ​​Watch Center’s research shows nearly 5,000 businesses across the country are affected by the fallout.
