Jameis Winston knocks FSU football, spotlights school’s women’s soccer team

Last month, Florida State announced its decision to retain head coach Mike Norvell despite the football program’s 5-7 record.
Former FSU star quarterback and current New York Giants receiver Jameis Winston took some time to talk about the state of the football program he once led to a Bowl Championship Series (BCS) national title.
In the meaningful message he shared with X, Winston congratulated FSU’s women’s football team for winning their fifth championship, while also dealing a blow to the school’s other football team.

“Thank you @FSUSoccer for consistently being our best football team over the years!” 2013 wrote the Heisman Trophy winner.
The football team recently celebrated its fifth NCAA championship and has hoisted the trophy in 2018, 2021, 2023 and now 2025.
During his tenure in Tallahassee, Winston was more accustomed to winning games than losing.

Including the national championship game win, Winston compiled a 27-1 record in college. Winston declared for the NFL Draft after the 2014 season and was the No. 1 overall pick in 2015.

In the 11 seasons since Winston’s departure, FSU has posted a 76-60 record. Norvell led the team to just two winning seasons during his six years at the helm.

The Seminoles’ 2025 season started on a high note as the team celebrated its upset win over Alabama. FSU went on to win the next two games, but the 3-0 start was followed by a four-game losing streak.

Florida State is just 7-16 over the last two years and has failed to win a road game during that span. In a statement released shortly after the school announced Norvell’s return, Florida State President Richard McCullough acknowledged the football program’s need for improvement.
“Coach Norvell embraces our support throughout this process and agrees that success must be achieved. He continues to have unwavering faith in the future of this program, and so do we,” McCullough said. he said. “This decision reflects a combined determination to compete in the rapidly evolving college football environment while maintaining continuity within the program.”
