Veteran Democratic strategist James Carville argued Thursday that Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett is not a viable candidate, suggesting some of her controversial statements will upset her in the election.
Carville, co-host of the “Politics War Room” podcast, has been vocal for years about how the Democratic Party’s stance on a variety of issues has lost elections. He had previously criticized Crockett, arguing that he spoke more about himself than voters; He thinks this violates a fundamental rule in politics.
One episode of their podcast On the show, which aired Thursday, co-host Al Hunt read a question from a listener who asked why Carville thought Democratic Texas Senate candidate James Talarico was a better candidate for the Texas Senate race than Crockett.

“Crockett said that Hispanics who voted for Trump have a slave mentality. This is not very smart. This will put you in a difficult position in the general election,” Carville said.
In a 2024 interview with Vanity Fair, Crockett compared Hispanic Trump supporters concerned about illegal immigration to people with a “slave mentality.” In December, Crockett attempted to walk back those comments during an interview on CNN.
He later said, in the interest of “anyone with even a little sense of humanity”, that he “mocked Greg Abbott, who is a funny figure, but not because he’s a funny figure and an intellectual idiot, but because he’s actually in a wheelchair. That’s not right.”
“This is just an online fundraising attempt with some fanatical progressives in Seattle,” he defended about his controversial comment.
Crockett had referred to wheelchair-bound Texas Gov. Greg Abbott as “Governor Hot Wheels,” which drew him bipartisan criticism. He later said he was only thinking of “the planes, trains, and automobiles he used to transfer immigrants to communities run by Black mayors, deliberately creating tension and fear among the most vulnerable.”
Carville argued that Democratic Texas Senate candidate James Talarico would not only be more viable but would also likely vote for the same progressive agenda.

“I’m rooting for Jim Talarico, you know, I think Jim’s a great guy, but I’ll basically root for anybody that I think has the best chance of winning,” Carville said. “And it’s clear to me that Jim will have a much better chance of winning the general election than Jasmine Crockett.
“I don’t think Jasmine is a bad person. By the way, I don’t think there’s much of a difference in how they vote. I don’t think you’re going to get a significantly different outcome, but if you don’t win, you didn’t do s—.”
“So if you want to win the election and that is as important to you as it is to me, then you have to side with Jim Talarico,” Carville said. “It’s that simple.”
