Veteran Democratic strategist James Carville warned Democrats not to view New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani’s victory as a bellwether for the country in a new podcast.
Although the Democratic Party has undergone change following the defeat of then-Vice President Kamala Harris to President Donald Trump, recent victories by both moderate and progressive candidates have sent mixed messages about the party’s progress toward victory. During an appearance Daily Monster Podcast On Monday’s report, host Joanna Coles asked Carville about the future of the Democratic Party.
“So let’s unpack some here,” he said. “The mayor of New York has never been a very important figure in national politics. Let me repeat, the mayor of New York has never been a very important figure in national politics.”
Carville, who has been critical of Mamdani in the past, cited the many major changes that have occurred in politics, quipping that many people’s view to the contrary is: “But we must talk about Mamdani, because New York is the center of the universe, and there is nothing in the United States but New York.”

He continued: “Actually, New York City is not a big player in finance. It’s a big player in theater, it’s a big player in advertising, it’s a big player in creativity. It’s one of my favorite cities in the whole world. I’m actually going there tomorrow, I can’t wait. But you’re not the center of the political universe. You just aren’t. You’re not even a place to swing. If you didn’t have money, politicians wouldn’t care much about you.”
“Do I take this to mean that you’re saying the future of the Democratic Party will be moderate?” he asked.
Carville argued that the Democratic Party does not have a message right now, but an argument that Republicans need to be stopped.
“The only way to send a message is for Democratic voters to choose their own presidential candidate,” he said.

“Now, we know for a fact that I may be 72 years old in this century, but I may not even be then, but the Democrats have never chosen a far left candidate. Until now,” Carville said, mocking the idea that Mamdani represents where Democrats are politically across the country. “It’s hindering the flow of the story right now, isn’t it? Because New York is supposed to be at the center of the story, right?”
When Cole continued to share data on attendance at Mamdani, arguing that electing a democratic socialist was important, Carville replied, “This is great, this is great, this is New York City. Nothing else.” He added: “I’m telling you that you are not the center of the political universe in the United States.”
“This is very disappointing to me,” the host joked. “This is a brutal Monday morning.”
