A powerful earthquake off the coast of northern Japan on Monday night injured at least 30 people and caused widespread disruption. The earthquake, initially reported as a 7.6 magnitude earthquake but later downgraded to 7.5 by the JMA, caused a Tsunami warning and structural damage to the building.

Shocking images emerged on social media documenting the immediate impact of the earthquake; including a video shot from a newsroom that immediately went viral.

Office ChaosIn the 1 minute 54 second video, which reportedly came from the Hachinohe city branch of broadcaster ABA Aomori Asahi Broadcasting, walls are seen shaking violently, papers are flying off the tables, and equipment is barely standing due to the strong tremors.

Destruction of Infrastructure: Roads damaged by the earthquake (images show gashes with at least one car stuck in a hole) and broken glass was strewn across roads and sidewalks in affected areas.

Losses and Power Outages

Dozens of people were injured in the earthquake, one of whom was seriously injured on the northern island of Hokkaido.

Casualties and Fire: Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi confirmed that 30 people were injured due to the earthquake off the coast of Aomori prefecture. Government spokesman Minoru Kihara confirmed a house fire was confirmed.

Freezing Temperatures: Tremors left about 2,700 homes without power in freezing temperatures in Aomori, but most power was restored within a few hours.

Tsunami Warning and Safety Precautions

The JMA initially issued a dire warning of possible tsunami waves of up to 3 meters (10 feet), prompting mass evacuations.

Evacuation: Emergency services advised nearly 28,000 people to leave their homes; Media reports claimed that some makeshift shelters had reached full capacity.

Real Waves: Eventually the largest waves recorded reached 70 centimeters – 28 inches, and warnings were lifted a few hours later.

Transportation and Nuclear: Shinkansen bullet train services were stopped to conduct track checks, but officials confirmed that no abnormalities were detected at the Higashidori or Onagawa nuclear power plants.

Prime Minister Takaichi urged residents to remain vigilant, citing the JMA’s view that the earthquake increased the likelihood of similar or larger tremors in the coming days.

“Please listen to information from the JMA or local governments for about a week, check if the furniture is repaired and be ready to evacuate when you feel shaken,” he said.
