Suriname Fear: At least nine people, including children, died in a stabbing attack in a town near Paramaribo, the capital of Suriname, Xinhua reported Sunday, citing local media reports.

The attack took place in the town of Meerzorg, located across the Suriname River from the capital, and began on Saturday evening. Media reports stated that the suspect attacked his neighbors as well as his own family. Among those killed were the man’s four children.

Police detained the suspect shortly after the incident. Xinhua reported that authorities have not yet disclosed the reason for the attack and that the investigation is ongoing.

The murders sent shockwaves across the country; leaders and residents expressed sadness and disbelief at the violence.

President of Suriname, Jennifer Simons, reacted to the incident with a post on social media, expressing her surprise and expressing her condolences to the families of the victims.

“At a time when family and friends should be holding on and supporting each other, we are faced with the harsh reality that there is another side of the world,” he said on Facebook. “I wish all the mourners strength, courage and comfort during this unimaginably difficult time.”

Authorities have not released further details about the victims or the circumstances leading up to the attack.
