Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas, denied believing Hispanic Trump voters have a “slave mentality” when asked Tuesday about his past allegations.
CNN’s Jake Tapper reminded the Texas Senate candidate of comments he made to Vanity Fair in 2024, in which he compared Latinos who voted for President Donald Trump to slaves who “hated” them.
“It almost reminds me of what people would talk about when they talked about the ‘slave mentality’ and the hatred that some slaves had towards them,” he said.
“It’s almost like a slave mentality. It’s crazy to me to hear how anti-immigrant most of them are as immigrants. I’m literally talking about people who just got here and can barely vote, who have that kind of attitude.”

Tapper asked if all Hispanic Trump voters still have a “slave mentality.”
“No, frankly, that’s not what was said,” Crockett said. “It wasn’t said that every Latino has that kind of mentality.”
“No, no, those who vote for the powerful or people who believe in Trump’s immigration policy,” Tapper explained.

“So I don’t believe that the people who voted for Trump actually believed in what they were getting. That’s No. 1. What Trump said was that he was going to throw out the bad guys. That’s what I was talking about,” Crockett said.

Crockett reiterated that he “doesn’t understand what’s going on” with Latin Americans who insist there are people entering the country “the wrong way.”
“I also knew what Trump meant because Trump had a record. Trump had a record of locking kids up and putting them in cages. So I knew what Trump meant. So it didn’t make sense to me,” Crockett said.

In the Vanity Fair interview, Crockett also belittled White women, claiming they were “backing down” and failing Democratic candidates.

“I said I don’t trust White women. I just said I told you, and I think you need to talk to your sisters because they’re the group that failed Hillary Clinton. I mean, when you look back at the numbers, it was White women who failed her. So, if they failed Hillary, I don’t know that I can believe that they won’t fail Kamala,” Crockett said.

He also accused Black men of “putting down” former Vice President Kamala Harris.
Crockett is trying to become the first Democrat to win a U.S. Senate race in Texas since 1988. Trump made big gains with Latino voters, easily carrying the state against Harris in 2024, and no Democratic White House candidate has won Texas since 1976.
