Billionaire philanthropist MacKenzie Scott, ex-wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, donated $80 million to Howard University, making it one of the largest gifts in the institution’s 158-year history. Deeply committed to philanthropic work, Scott made his latest donation as part of his ongoing effort to promote racial equity by supporting historically Black colleges and universities across the United States, helping to strengthen educational access and opportunities for underrepresented communities.

$63 million of the donations were made to Howard University and $17 million to the School of Medicine. Both contributions are unrestricted, providing the university with flexibility to allocate funds to key strategic priorities.
The university announced the donation over the weekend, saying the contribution will increase student financial aid, faculty support and campus development and be a major investment in the institution’s long-term growth and academic excellence.

“This historic investment will not only help maintain our current momentum, but will also help support essential student aid, advance infrastructure improvements, and create a reserve fund to further sustain operational continuity, student success, academic excellence, and research innovation.”

Howard interim president and president emeritus Wayne A.I. Frederick said in a statement.

In addition to his donation to Howard University, Scott recently contributed $42 million to 10,000 Degrees, a Bay Area nonprofit that supports low-income and minority students in pursuing higher education, according to StyleCaster.com.
