Ladakh Gets Region-Specific Aadhaar Cards

What are you doing? People of Ladakh will now have region-specific Aadhaar cards; This is a significant administrative development reflecting the distinct identity of the Union Territory.

So far, Aadhaar ID for residents of Ladakh has remained linked to Jammu and Kashmir, of which it was part of the high-altitude Himalayan region before seceding as a separate Union Territory on August 5, 2019.

The latest move addresses long-standing concerns of local residents by officially disconnecting Ladakh’s Aadhaar records from J&K.

Officials in Leh described the decision as a historic move and stated that it met the long-standing demand of the people of Ladakh. The change is seen as a significant step towards administrative clarity and recognition of Ladakh’s unique status, while also simplifying identity-related processes for residents across the region.

Updating of Aadhaar records has been done based on Ladakh specific PIN codes. These PIN codes were verified in coordination with the Ministry of Posts and subsequently shared with the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) to ensure accuracy and official verification of the updated data.

An official spokesperson in Leh said that this development brings significant relief to the people of Ladakh as residents are no longer required to individually visit Aadhaar centers to update their records.

“They can now conveniently download their updated e-Aadhaar directly from the official UIDAI portal. Those who want to get a PVC Aadhaar card can also order online by paying a nominal fee, making the entire process simpler, faster and more accessible,” he added.
