Jess Carter: Engand defender says Euro 2025 abuse made her not want to leave her hotel room

England defender Jess Carter said he did not want to leave his hotel room after receiving racist messages online during Euro 2025.
Earlier this month, Nigel Dewale, 60, pleaded guilty to sending abusive posts to 28-year-old Carter’s TikTok account during the tournament, which champions England won.
The messages included derogatory remarks about Carter’s race and suggested that people with brown skin were “murderers” and “caretakers.”
The former Birmingham City and Chelsea centre-back also said he felt the abuse faced by female players was “getting worse”.
Carter, who currently plays for Gotham FC in the National Women’s Soccer League in the United States, said she had to take a step back from social media as she had been subjected to “a lot of racist abuse” since the start of the tournament.
“I didn’t want to leave the hotel in case there were people saying they were going to be with us in Switzerland,” Carter told BBC Sport.
“It was a pretty scary time. It completely devalues you as a person.”
