Newsom says he is considering 2028 US presidential run

Democratic California governor Gavin Newsom said in an interview that he is considering running for president in 2028 and will make his decision after the 2026 midterm elections.
Newsom has made some moves to test the waters for a potential presidential run this year, and has been prominent within his party in opposing Republican President Donald Trump on a variety of issues.
“I’m looking forward to who will introduce themselves in 2028 and who will meet that moment,” Newsom said on CBS News Sunday Morning.
Asked if he was considering running, Newsom said, “Yes, I would be lying if I said otherwise.”
Newsom has pushed California to the forefront of Democrats’ efforts to redraw congressional maps to offset similar efforts by Republican-led states at a time when the two parties are fighting for control of the U.S. House of Representatives in the 2026 elections, where Republicans have a narrow majority.
The governor also confronted Trump over the military deployment to Los Angeles.
