The New York Jets’ Sunday started with a terrible loss as legendary center Nick Mangold passed away after a long battle with kidney disease.

But his former squad honored him in the biggest way with a miraculous comeback victory, earning its first win of the season in a 39-38 thriller against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Justin Fields and the Jets’ offense stunned Joe Flacco and the Bengals by scoring 23 points in the fourth quarter to improve to 1-7 on the season. Meanwhile, Cincinnati’s momentum stalled after a blowout win against the Pittsburgh Steelers. They are currently 3-5 on the season.

The fourth quarter started with the Bengals leading 31-16, Flacco picked up where he left off in the Steelers game and continued to put the Bengals in position to score. But Fields, who came into this game with tons of scrutiny of his play this season, continued to move the ball and stay in the game.

So in the quarter, Breece Hall, who had 133 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries, ran for 35 yards to settle in the red zone. He came into the end zone a few plays later and the Jets went for two points with Fields breaking the plate rather than kicking the extra point.

With the game tied 31-24 in favor of Cincinnati, the Bengals’ running game responded with runs from Chase Brown and Samaje Perine leading the way, ending with the former scoring his second touchdown of the game.

However, the Jets came back once again as Hall’s second touchdown of the quarter was a 27-yard run; he avoided multiple tacklers, stayed on the edge and found the colorful paint. The Jets went two in a row for the second drive in a row, and it was a big deal because Isaiah Davis intercepted the pass and crossed the goal line upon review to make the score 36-32.

The Jets’ defense needed a stop, though, because Flacco kept scrutinizing them to that point. Mission accomplished when Will McDonald IV forced a punt on third-and-10, securing the Jets’ first sack of the game.

The Jets took advantage and took the lead after the extra point in nine plays when Hall threw a touchdown pass to tight end Mason Taylor.

While the Jets were celebrating, they knew the Bengals had all three timeouts and enough time for Evan McPherson to get into field goal range for a potential game-winning try. However, Flacco found Andre Iosivas twice on third, fourth and 9 and was unable to turn the ball over, giving the Jets their first victory of the year.
