J&K Police on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, filed First Information Reports (FIRs) against National Conference leader and Member of Parliament (MP) Aga Syed Ruhullah and former Srinagar mayor Junaid Azim Mattu for allegedly “creating fear, disturbing public order and promoting illegal activities”.

“Police have taken action based on credible inputs regarding the circulation of false, fabricated and misleading content on digital and social media platforms with the aim of creating fear, disturbing public order and promoting illegal activities and have registered cases against Agha Sayyid Ruhullah Mehdi and Junaid Azim Mattu in connection with the matter,” a police spokesperson said. he said.

The police claimed that the content in question, prima facie, “reflects the spread of distorted narratives and unverified information that could cause public unrest and social disharmony.”

Police said two FIRs under Sections 197(1)(d) and 353(1)(b) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) have been registered at the Cyber Police Station in Srinagar. “An investigation into both incidents has been launched and is ongoing. Further legal action will be taken as required by law,” police said.

The FIRs come at a time when Kashmir has been subjected to three days of street protests by locals over the killing of Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Khamenei in an attack in Iran on February 28. Both Mr. Ruhullah and Mr. Mattu shared posts about these protests on their social media accounts.

Earlier in the day, Mr. Ruhullah said his Facebook account had been suspended and his security details had been weakened. “Some idiots in the J&K Police and administration think that withdrawing or dropping my security details and suspending my Facebook account will stop me from publicizing their atrocities. This is ridiculous,” MP Ruhullah said.

He said his father “was a martyr for his people, and that’s what fascinates me.” Deputy Ruhullah said, “I am a citizen of this country and I will use my right to stand against your oppression, your violations of the law, and the freedom and democracy given to us by the Constitution until the last drop of my blood.”

Mr. Mattu said in a post about X that his security was “effectively withdrawn with immediate effect.” “This measure was aimed at silencing me,” Mr. Mattu said.

He claimed that the move was in response to his statements about Iran and the martyrdom of Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei and for “speaking out against the moral abdication and deafening silence of the BJP-led government on the illegitimate barbaric attack on Iran by the US and Israel.”

He said mainstream leaders in Kashmir today “gave in and sold their language to the BJP-led government and chose to shamefully speak diplomatically about Khamenei’s assassination and the brutal war on Iran and Palestine.”

“I will continue to commit the crime of lack of conscience. Such measures aimed at suppressing my voice will not stop me from speaking for humanity and justice and seeking answers to the unprecedented moral sacrifice of my country and its leadership when it comes to Iran,” the former mayor of Srinagar said.
