JONATHAN TURLEY: Trump ousts Bondi as Democrats gear up for new probes, revenge politics

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

There’s an old joke that scientists switch from lab rats to lawyers because you’re not as attached to them as you used to be. President Donald Trump has shown the same tendency to avoid relying on private or government advisors. Attorney General Pam Bondi is only the latest in a long line of lawyers released by a president made famous by the slogan “You’re Fired.”

There is no evidence of bad blood between President Trump and Bondi. The attorney general has been attacked for his loyalty to the president and has stood by him through some of the riskiest moments, from impeachment to criminal defense. As his “apprentices” learned, it’s not personal. It’s a job.

Jeff Sessions. Rex Tillerson. Bill Barr. Mark Esper. Kristi Noem. Trump’s Cabinet picks are known more for shelving than storage.

In fact, being a cabinet member in the Trump administration is about as safe as being the quarterback of the Cleveland Browns.

Trump has always viewed layoffs as a way to encourage higher levels of performance.

There may be a reason why Trump wants to act now on replacing attorneys general. Predictions are mounting that Democrats will lose the House of Representatives and now may lose the Senate.

Democrats are running on the promise of launching a new wave of investigations and impeachments targeting not just President Trump but anyone who supports him.

Figures like Susan Rice, chief policy adviser to both President Barack Obama and Joe Biden, have vowed “revenge” on those who pushed Democrats from power and warned that “this won’t end well for them.”

Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., promised that once in power, once they retake Congress, they will start jailing Trumpians.

Democratic strategist James Carville had previously threatened that “collaborators” could be treated the same way as after World War II.

Trump’s ability to get his successor confirmed will become much more challenging as we get closer to the midterm elections.

Trump must decide who is best at steering the turbulent waters ahead.

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche has the street cred that Trump values. A successful litigator and former prosecutor, Blanche is neither flashy nor enterprising. He’s a deadly litigator who can drill you like a trout without breaking a sweat. He stood by the president in and out of court. While he will be a lightning rod for Democrats attacking him for his role in releasing the Epstein files, his determination to combat a hostile media likely appealed to the president.

Blanche provides a seamless transition for the department. All she has to do is literally walk down the aisle to take the reins from Bondi.

Another name reportedly being considered is EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin, who is the easiest and most popular name to approve among members of Congress. Zeldin quickly transformed the EPA, including removing obstacles to increasing energy production. Zeldin, who was nearly elected governor of New York, has crossover appeal in Washington as someone who cut his teeth in that town.

Other candidates include state attorneys general as well as wildcards like U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro, a former judge in Washington, D.C., with a very tough reputation. A deep delegation.

There will be no shortage of candidates for this job. The attorney general’s office under Trump is everything you could want in Washington. That is, everything except job security.
