One of the most memorable moments of the 2026 Winter Olympics came early as skier Lindsey Vonn put on a gutsy performance for the ages, competing at the age of 41 just a week after injuring her knee in a crash.

Unfortunately, as admirable as her determination was, she severely injured herself in another accident just 13 seconds into her run in the women’s downhill final.

Five months later, Vonn is still dealing with her injuries.

“This has been a very slow process,” Vonn said People While attending the ESPYs in New York on Wednesday. “It’s been five months since I’ve been able to go to the gym in any meaningful way. Walking is still very difficult for me. My ankle is still broken.”

Whatever the outcome, the decision to attempt this run remains one of the bravest moments of the Games.

“I was in a wheelchair for too long. I was on crutches for too long,” Vonn said. “To be honest, I couldn’t walk unaided for almost 3.5 months. When I was able to walk on my own, I was very touched.”
